Yorkers make medical history in Laos

By HANK MERGES The York Dispatch

From York to Laos ... with love ... a medical mission trip ... the first American doctors the Laotian government ever authorized to function in the Asian nation.

Indeed, Dr. Vasudevan Tiruchelvam, who headed the York delegation, made history by performing the first-ever laparoscopic hernia repair in Laos.

Not only were the Americans welcomed, but they are invited back to Laos.

In addition to "Dr. Tiru," as he's well known locally, were: Drs. Brian K. Flowers, Corey Burchman, Jill Wolfgang, Joshua J. Larson, Devin D. Sanders, Samuel R. Akman and Paul R. Stauffer; RNs Katherine R. Peters, Ruth M. Vaughn and Leah Wagner; administrator Barbara L. Woolley; and historian Joan Beau lac Zachor.
The delegation, all of whom gave up vacation time, traveled under the auspices of the York County Medical Foundation, an arm of the York County Medical Society.
